Mud Morganfield: For Pops | A Tribute To Muddy Waters

For this CD release, Mud Morganfield pays tribute and shows love to his father, the legendary blues artist Muddy Waters. Listening to the Mud Morganfield and Kim Wilson disc For Pops | A Tribute To Muddy Waters, the energy of the first track "Gone to Main Street" is impressive. Morganfield's deep bluesy vocals are richly supported with a solid band featuring Wilson on harmonica.

The liner notes mention the group had a house party the night before the date with plenty of good food, family, and friends. No wonder Morganfield, Wilson and the band come out swinging the next day for the recording sessions. Clearly, you can't underestimate the Power of Home Cooking. The aforementioned first number, "Main Street" with Mud's killer vocals is one of the potent songs here. "Just to Be With You," "My Dog Can't Bark,"" Trouble No More" and "She's Got It" are some of the gems that round out this fourteen-song blues testimonial.

During Waters' stellar career, he recorded many hit songs written by another blues paragon, the late great Willie Dixon. Mr. Dixon's world renown composition skills are well represented here with four songs: "I Want To Be Loved," " I Don't Know Why," " I Love the Life I Live ," and the eternal " I Just Want to Make Love to You ." While some of the other tunes here may not be among his biggest hits, they are very familiar to any serious blues fan.

Morganfield's vocals are infused with the depth and feeling that bring authentic conviction to this collection of Waters' songs. I'm sure Muddy himself and blues aficionados everywhere will savor this ringing tribute to one of the undisputed icons of American music. Muddy Waters' timeless legacy of outstanding blues is alive & well. Fortunately for all of us, it continues through his son, Mud Morganfield.
