Andrew Vogt, da non confondere col quasi omonimo Andrew Voigt, membro fondatore del glorioso Rova Saxophone Quartet, è un bassista dell'area di Chicago con frequentazioni anche illustri (Ernie Watts, Donny McCaslin, Stevie Wonder, Nate Watts) che nel febbraio 2016 ha registrato questo breve CD (trentatré minuti: lui lo cataloga addirittura come EP) che costituisce la prima incisione interamente a suo nome.

Vi confluiscono nove brani tutti a sua firma improntati a una fusion discreta, di taglio qua e là vagamente cameristico, in cui i molti musicisti coinvolti compaiono in realtà a intermittenza, con la parte del leone che, oltre al background ritmico di varia natura, spetta al sax tenore di Dustin Laurenzi.

Le cose migliori arrivano dal secondo brano in scaletta, "Ballerina's Footsteps," che fin dal titolo sembra evocare reminiscenze shorteriane, e dal sesto, "The Beast Within," specie per i begli impasti di fiati, morbidi e curati, che poi s'inspessiscono via via, ascendendo anche a lievi turbolenze. Una certa eleganza di tratto, peraltro, segna quasi tutto il materiale del lavoro, per quanto ciò non riesca ad elevarlo troppo al si sopra di un pur dignitosissimo artigianato.
