Marc Blitzstein: First Life: The Rare Early Works

Chi in Italia conosce Marc Blitzstein (1905-1964) lo dovrà probabilmente al film "Le ali della liberà" che, in una New York fervente anni Trenta, racconta le vicende dell'allestimento del musical "The Cradle Will Rock," scritto e realizzato per l'appunto dal compositore americano Blitzstein coadiuvato da Orson Welles alla regia. La grande eco che il suo musical suscitò - un'allegoria politica brechtiana (o meglio comunista) che verteva intorno al tema della corruzione e dell'avidità sociale - fece conoscere al pubblico Blitzstein, che negli anni seguirà a scrivere opere di grande successo, ponendo in secondo piano la sua produzione da camera.

First Life è un'ottima occasione per chi sia interessato agli anni Trenta, a quel clima musicale e a Blitzstein in particolare. Questo disco difatti presenta composizioni giovanili di Blitzstein per solo piano e quartetto d'archi.

Per quanto riguarda le prime, vale a dire "Piano Sonata" (1927), "Piano Percussion Music" (1929) e "Scherzo" (1930), essendo Blitzstein stato allievo della compositrice francese Nadia Boulanger, esse risultano fortemente caratterizzate sul piano ritmico. I tre pezzi, ed in particolare i tre movimenti di "Piano Percussion Music," sono decisamente energici, dissonanti a tratti, anche impetuosi.

I due quartetti hanno invece un carattere più lirico, quasi drammatico. In particolare "Serenade for String Quartet," con i suoi tre movimenti Largo di uguale durata, pur presentando per volere dello stesso Blitzstein nuance melodiche, in quadro generale apposta dissonante.

Pregevole e interessante prodotto, per qualità di esecuzione e rarità, meglio unicità, di repertorio.
