Jelly Rolls Band: Fifty-Fifty

Sappiamo per certo che Gil Evans stava progettando un album per la sua orchestra con Jimi Hendrix alla chitarra solista, in un ruolo di front-man paragonabile a quello che Gil aveva immaginato e messo in atto per Miles Davis negli anni cinquanta e sessanta. Il progetto non si realizzò solamente perchè Jimi Hendrix lasciò inopinatamente il pianeta a metà settembre del 1970, poche settimane prima di andare in studio con Gil e i suoi. Per la cronaca nel 1974 Gil realizzò l'album che aveva in mente di fare con Jimi, utilizzando al suo posto John Abrecrombie, Ryo Kawasaki e Keith Loving. Ottimi chitarristi, per carità, ma niente a che vedere con Jimi, purtroppo. Non sappiamo se invece Gil Evans ha mai pensato ad una collaborazione con Frank Zappa. E ovviamente non sappiamo, nel caso, cosa sarebbe potuto accadere.

Una possibile soluzione ce la propone la Jelly Rolls Band, un gruppo di giovani musicisti italiani che già avevamo ascoltato nell'album Dancing Colours. Gil Evans e Frank Zappa sono abbastanza evidentemente i loro eroi di riferimento e questa musica tutta registrata dal vivo ne elabora vezzi e virtù in maniera interessante, con impasti timbrici molto ben strutturati, arrangiamenti dinamici e proiettati in avanti, assoli pertinenti e ben colorati.
