Aa.Vv.: Exit Music - Songs with Radio Heads

Ambizioso e per nulla scontato il progetto di coverizzare la band più sperimentale che il rock degli ultimi tempi possa ricordare. Ambizioso perché il tentativo di decostruzione del formato canzone portato avanti dalla band guidata da Thom Yorke, da Ok Computer in poi, se da un lato è tale da lasciare molto spazio alle sortite improvvisative e alla fantasia, dall'altro può essere una trappola. Senza rete, però.

Non prevedibile perché, sebbene ci siano stati già attestati di stima allo sforzo creativo dei Radiohead (la versione di "Karma Police" di Brad Melhdau, ad esempio), ogni tributo, al di fuori di facili proclami retorici, è un invidiabile riconoscimento.

I quattordici brani scelti dal repertorio della band di Oxford comprendono tutti i dischi finora pubblicati tranne Hail to the Thieves, il loro ultimo CD da studio. La parte da leone la fa Ok Computer (cinque brani) e non è un caso: il disco del 1997 è nella coscienza e nelle orecchie di molti il capolavoro della band. Largo spazio anche ai brani tratti da The Bends (quattro), l'album più "cantabile", e da Kid A (sempre quattro), invece quello più sperimentale.

Alcuni brani seguono sostanzialmente lo spirito dell'originale ("No Surprises"); altri smussano alcune asperità e/o le dilatano (gli oltre otto minuti di "Morning Bell"); altri ancora spingono i Radiohead in altri limbi stilistici (curiosa la versione alla Marvin Gaye di "High and Dry", ma anche quella di "Just" che combina una sezione di fiati con i drum breaks). Così come notevole è la "verticalizzazione" rock jazz di "Karma Police" a cura dei terribili Bad Plus.

Un CD che è come una vera e propria tesi di laurea. Sperimentale.
