La sempre straordinaria etichetta londinese Soul Jazz ripesca dall'oscurità questa gemma realizzata nel 1974 in poche centinaia di copie [etichetta autoprodotta, ovviamente, la Supernal Records] dal batterista David Lee Jr.

Originario di New Orleans, ma pienamente calato nell'atmosfera di ricerca black della Grande Mela a cavallo tra gli anni Sessanta e i Settanta [ha suonato con Roy Ayers e Lonnie Liston Smith, solo per citarne due], Lee Jr. fonde in questo Evolution i ritmi percussivi della sua città di nascita con le aspirazioni cosmic post-coltraniane.

Ne escono ipnotismi elettrici [Lee Jr. suona tutti gli strumenti tranne chitarra e basso elettrici, affidati rispettivamente a una leggenda di New Orleans come George Davis e a uno strumentista flessibile come Bob Cranshaw] e giungle timbriche che profumano vagamente di retro, ma che conservano ancora oggi una particolare intensità espressiva.

Erano altri tempi, certamente, ma vale la pena di ascoltarlo, perché i germi creativi di quegli anni sono quelli che animano ancora molto ottimo jazz.
