Chris Lightcap's Bigmouth: Epicenter
Un esempio? Chris Lightcap e i suoi Bigmouth, quintetto che nel 2010 aveva attirato più di uno sguardo con il superlativo Deluxe. E che ora rialza la testa, sempre sotto l'egida della portoghese Clean Feed, dando alle stampe un seguito all'altezza di cotanta bellezza.
Ovviamente nel segno del jazz. Perché Epicenter, da qualunque parte lo si guardi, è semplicemente e meravigliosamente un disco jazz. La scrittura, l'armonia, i colori, il suono, il senso del ritmo, la tensione: tutto è jazz. Al di là di qualsiasi ragionevole dubbio e alla portata di qualsiasi orecchio; jazz rassicurante, confortevole, eppure coraggioso, attuale, a tratti impertinente.
Emblematica l'iniziale "Nine South," che introdotta da un ipnotico ostinato del Wurlitzer (strepitoso, al solito, Craig Taborn) sfocia in una prevedibile sequenza di assoli prima di congedarsi con un finale mozzafiato tutto incastri e sovrapposizioni. Simile il giochetto in "Epicenter," che sotto la maschera di un brano qualunque nasconde imprevisti e sciccherie assortite (travolgente il drumming di sua maestà Gerald Cleaver; impeccabili Tony Malaby e Chris Cheek). Meno allineato il piglio indie-rock dell'urbana "Down East," che prepara la strada alla nostalgica "Stillwell," un perfetto bigino della ricetta Bigmouth. Chiusura in grande stile con i sei minuti scarsi di "All Tomorrow's Parties," omaggio a Lou Reed che in un'ipotetica scaletta farebbe la sua splendida figura come bis strappa ovazione.
Prendete nota: il mainstream è vivo e lotta insieme a noi.
