The Ex & Brass Unbound: Enormous Door

Sebbene siano - da oltre trent'anni - una formazione essenzialmente anarco/punk, gli olandesi The Ex sono un nome che gli appassionati delle avventure più estreme e non convenzionali del jazz conoscono bene, per i frequentissimi collegamenti con la scena impro dei Paesi Bassi [e Europea in genere], nonché per il ruolo fondamentale avuto nel veicolare la virulenza sonica della musica etiopica [pensiamo alla collaborazione con Getatchew Mekuria] nei circuiti avant del Vecchio Continente.

Da qualche anni poi, girano in questa versione espansa [ma impossibile non ricordare anche il precedente della Ex Orchest, apprezzata a Saalfelden nel 2001] con l'apporto di alcuni degli strumentisti a fiato più creativi e incendiari della scena internazionale, dai "gemelli diversi" Vandermark e Gustafsson al trombonista Wolter Wierbos, passando per il trombettista siciliano Roy Paci che, nonostante i tanti impegni con progetti di matrice più popular, non dimentica mai di essere una delle più emozionanti variabili impazzite dell'energia musicale italiana.

Ne nasce, dopo lungo lavorio, un disco che è una magnifica minaccia alla quiete che talvolta avvolge anche le orecchie più curiose. Sulla base dura e pura delle canzoni degli Ex si innestano infatti con naturalezza le sortite dei fiati, rendendole carnali, tribali, danzanti, rileggendo "Belomi Benna" di Mahmoud Ahmed e chiudendo con una nuova lettura di quel "Theme from Konono" che già avevamo apprezzato nel disco Turn.

Un invito potente a vivere questa esperienza dal vivo, se vi capita, ma anche uno dei lavori più significativi degli Ex in questi ultimo anni, che riannoda il senso di oltre tre decenni di musica militante e sempre libera.
