Nicole Mitchell: Engraved in the Wind

Nuovo lavoro per la quarantaseienne flautista di Syracuse (ma com'è noto chicagoana d'adozione, e dal 2011 docente alla California University di Irvine) per la Rogue Art, stavolta senza accompagnamento alcuno. Vi aleggia un incedere generalmente limpido, netto, timbricamente prezioso, che ora sposa la causa del solo puro e altrove opta invece per la sovraincisione. Il canonico flauto traverso in do lascia qua e là il posto al contralto in sol (con le temperature che tendono fisiologicamente a farsi più quiete, cogitabonde), anche se in alcuni frangenti (per esempio in "Glacier Wall") sembra di individuare altri flauti (un altro, almeno) di diversa foggia (comunque non accreditati).

E' ovvio che la costola jazzistica a cui Nicole Mitchell si ricollega, quella - germinale - targata AACM (di cui, prima donna, ha ricoperto anche il ruolo di presidente), trova qui un ideale gemellaggio con inflessioni più squisitamente contemporaneo-colte, entro i paletti di una formula non facile da praticare e da reinventare brano dopo brano.

Tutti di alto livello i multitraccia ("Forest Family," "Beehive," "Desert Choir," "High Light at the Waterfall") che segnano periodiche stazioni del lavoro, mentre più in generale si fanno apprezzare soprattutto i brani più concisi ("Blue Montain," "Dadwee," "Cave of Forgoten Spring," "Making of Rose Quartz," che pure varca la soglia dei 5,' "Boiling River," "Engraved in the Wind," "Fireflies and Mischief on Dada B's Porch"), con un ricorso tutt'altro che sistematico (anzi piuttosto raro) all'ipersoffiato.

Disco per specialisti e non.
