Folgorato dall’ascolto di Focus, lo storico album di Stan Getz registrato con l’orchestra di Eddie Sauter, il multistrumentista e compositore Frank Macchia ha coltivato per trent’anni il sogno di registrare un disco per sassofono e orchestra d’archi.

L’occasione è finalmente arrivata con questo Emotions nel quale il sassofonista di San Francisco è accompagnato dalla Orchestra di Praga diretta da Adam Klemens.

Senza avventurarsi in scomodi paragoni con il capolavoro di Getz, possiamo affermare che Emotions è un lavoro complessivamente riuscito. Nonostante qualche lieve caduta di tono, quando gli impasti orchestrali virano troppo decisamente verso una sorta di smooth jazz e sonorità new age, gli arrangiamenti di Macchia offrono una buona tavolozza di colori, hanno grande rispetto per le dinamiche e i contrasti tra fiati ed archi, e articolano la sezione dei legni con combinazioni piacevolmente poco convenzionali.

Il tenore di Macchia non possiede né la voce vellutata né la disarmante leggerezza del sax di Getz, ma si muove fluido, sinuoso, misurato tra gli anfratti creati dagli spostamenti delle masse sonore.

Emotions, la cui punta di diamante è la suite suddivisa in quattro movimenti che dà il titolo all’album, è un disco che potrà piacere sia agli amanti del jazz orchestrale che i cultori della musica raffinata e di buon gusto.
