Misura, buon gusto e un po' di accademia: questo, in estrema sintesi, ciò che troviamo in questo elegante album inciso dal vivo alla Queens University of Charlotte nel luglio 2017 da uno degli autentici decani del pianismo jazz, Ran Blake (classe 1935), accanto alla collega ed ex-allieva Claire Ritter (1952), di fatto principale artefice dell'operazione (sua anche l'etichetta che ha prodotto l'album). I due suonano insieme o separatamente, in alcuni brani (cinque) abbinando al pianoforte della Ritter il sax tenore di Kent O'Doherty, australiano di Melbourne.

C'è un'impronta classicheggiante che aleggia lungo l'intero lavoro, svolto attorno a temi di Monk, Gershwin, Jobim e altri, ma soprattutto di Claire Ritter (undici sui venti totali) e in misura minore (tre) Ran Blake, un estremo aplomb che rompe di rado gli argini del bon ton, generando ora ammirazione ora un minimo di assuefazione. L'ascolto è ovunque gradevole, le esecuzioni inappuntabili (tranne, se vogliamo, nel "I Mean You" del duo Ritter/ O'Doherty, non esente da qualche imprecisione). Ottimo album per chi non pretende l'invenzione a tutti i costi.
