Arnold Schoenberg, Francis Poulenc, Charles Ives tutti insieme appassionatamente nell'abbraccio loro riservato da Dollshot, interessante quartetto riunito attorno ai due fratelli Kaplan (Rosalie alla voce e Noah al sassofono) e completato dal pianista Wes Matthews e dal bassista Giacomo Merega. La ricetta utilizzata da questi protagonisti della scena avant newyorchese è chiara sin dalle prime battute. Rispetto assoluto delle linee tematiche dei brani e altrettanto risoluta elaborazione attraverso una serie di micro- variazioni che vanno ad alterarne gli equilibri e l'humus con effetti ora ricchi di humor, a tratti inquietanti.

Il piano di Matthews e il basso acustico od elettrico di Merega sono i riferimenti obbligati del gruppo, per precisione esecutiva e per la rara capacità di suonare in and out senza forzature, con estrema naturalezza. Ciò consente di liberare appieno la forza diabolica delle altre due voci del quartetto. Quella da soprano di Rosalie circuisce con flessuosi vocalizzi di impianto operistico per poi spiazzare con tremende alterazioni timbriche vicine ai sperimentalismi dell'avanguardia mentre il sax rugoso e sarcastico di Noah porta turbolenze là dove meno te le aspetti.

Tra le maglie di una scrittura così sofisticata si insinuano alcuni momenti liberatori che fungono da camera di decompressione per le tensioni dell'ascoltatore. "The Trees," scritta da Matthews, sembra provenire direttamente dalla penna di Richard Thompson con la voce di Sandy Denny (pardon, di Rosalie Kaplan) ad ammaliarci come ai tempi dei migliori Fairport Convention. I due minuti di "Here's That Rainy Day," unico standard presente nel disco, sono in bilico precario tra atmosfere incantatorie e sottili increspature. Mentre "Fear of Clouds" richiama, seppur con modalità improntate ad un'improvvisazione più marcatamente jazzistica, le linee seguite da Dollshot per dare nuova veste a classici della musica del Novecento.
