Maria Schneider Orchestra: Days of Wine and Roses - Live at the Jazz Standard

Per gli amanti del miglior jazz orchestrale e per i fans di Maria Schneider questa ristampa è una splendida sorpresa. Pubblicato alcuni anni fa in edizione limitata (in una singolare confezione con due bottiglie di Riesling) il disco viene oggi ristampato dalla Artist Share. L'album, inciso nel gennaio 2000, ribadisce il valore di questa geniale bandleader in una serie di raffinate orchestrazioni offrendoci l'opportunità di valutare il suo valore di compositrice a partire dagli esordi.

Molti dei brani sono stati scritti nei primi anni della sua carriera, ed i più datati risalgono a vent'anni fa, quando Maria frequentava la Eastman School Of Music. Sono in particolare l'estroverso blues "Bird Count", l'impressionistico "Last Season" e il prezioso arrangiamento di "My Ideal". Partiture nate prima che l'orchestra esistesse oppure commissionate da altre formazioni che la Schneider ha poi revisionato.

Il brano d'apertura, "Lately" fu scritto nel 1987 per l'orchestra di Mel Lewis (che non l'eseguì mai) ed oggi ne apprezziamo il gusto aristocratico dei contrasti tra le sezioni e l'opulenza timbrica che esalta il dinamismo dell'estetica mainstream. Anche "The Willow" è in qualche modo legato a Mel Lewis ma più nell'omaggio che nell'affinità espressiva: i preziosi impasti orchestrali e l'atmosfera lenta e sontuosa l'avvicinano invece a Gil Evans (quello pre-elettrico degli anni cinquanta e sessanta) di cui Maria è stata valida collaboratrice. Le orchestrazioni di "That Old Black Magic" e "Over the Rainbow" gli furono invece commissionate da Bob Brookmeyer per un suo progetto con l'Orchestra radiofonica di Colonia.

Nonostante il disco documenti un ampio arco temporale e differenti approcci espressivi il risultato è quanto mai omogeneo e suggestivo. Uno dei massimi pregi della Schneider è la leggerezza della scrittura e la capacità di ottenere preziose tessiture orchestrali, tutte cose abbondano nella sequenza dei brani.

Tra le cose migliori abbiamo il raffinatissimo "Comecar de Novo", che non ha nulla d'invidiare al miglior Gil Evans e vede protagonista l'intenso sax soprano di Tim Ries. Ma ricordiamo ancora la personale e impressionistica versione di "Over Tte Rainbow" con il vibrante contralto di Charles Pillow che svetta sui raffinati fondali sonori. Altri solisti da segnalare solo i pregevoli Frank Kimbrough al piano e Rick Margitza al sax tenore ed ancora gli efficaci Scott Robinson al sax baritono, Greg Gisbert al flicorno e Ingrid Jensen alla tromba. Pur essendo stato inciso dal vivo la registrazione è magnifica e non è casuale la lunga dedica che la Schneider indirizza al tecnico David Baker.
