Patty Cronheim: Days Like These
Track review of "Superstition"
Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" is given a smooth, hard bop treatment in place of its original funk-inspired strut. Cronheim's silky low alto divines the supernatural essence of the song. Greg Wall's tenor saxophone and Clifford Adams' trombone recall the plush sound of The Jazz Messengers circa 1961, employing trombonist Curtis Fuller and tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Cronheim transcends mere blues to cast this popular song in a firm "Moondance" vibe; with its walking bass and intricate horn filigree, it's clear that Cronheim has been listening to a lot of Van Morrison.
