Rudy Royston: DAY
"Questo disco è un po' più aggressivo rispetto al primo," dice Royston, facendo riferimento a quello che definisce il suono "polveroso" di Flatbed Buggy e a quello relativamente swing di Day .
La dedica del disco è a due figure importanti della vita di Rudy recentemente scomparse: il fratello Ritchie e il suo mentore Ron Miles che lo accolse a Denver e, dopo averlo "nutrito" di insegnamenti, lo inserì nella strada jazz internazionale.
L'atmosfera folk che pervade il lavoro è profonda ma il fatto di essere stata concepita in modo arioso e in qualche modo "allargato" dona al progetto una sorprendente ambientazione cameristica che aggiunge colori bizzarri ed inaspettati. I retaggi delle atmosfere proprie del più classico Ron Miles si ritrovano nei tratti profondamente onirici di quasi ogni composizione di questa incisione e, dopo l'interessante "PaNoptic" di sola batteria, propongono la capacità di Royston di intessere musica di grande qualità e col necessario calore per essere valutato quale un musicista del jazz moderno decisamente fuori dal comune.
