Joe McPhee - Michael Zerang: Creole Gardens (A New Orleans Suite)

Joe McPhee fa parte degli improvvisatori più prolifici su disco, ma anche di quelli più ignorati. Piuttosto schivo, concentrato soltanto sulla musica, è invece tra i musicisti più riflessivi e in relazione con ciò che lo circonda. Questo bel duetto con il percussionista Michael Zerang è legato a memorie di New Orleans e di tutta la storia che questa città rappresenta. Non che c'entri nulla lo stile di jazz omonimo - McPhee guarda al passato soltanto in funzione di un linguaggio contemporaneo -; ma la narrazione sonora si ispira sia alla Congo Square del primo Novecento, sia alla rinascita della città dopo Katrina.

Proprio l'iniziale "Congo Square Dances / Saints and Sinners" cattura l'ascoltatore con i suoi 24 minuti di affresco in costante trasformazione. McPhee trascolora dagli effetti speciali della pocket trumpet dei primi cinque minuti al tema solenne che dà identità a brano, prima che Zerang rimanga solo con pelli e tamburi. A metà del tragitto McPhee imbraccia il sax alto, per una evoluzione ricca di pathos, tra tracce della tradizione e libertà del free, fino al respiro blues dell'epilogo. Un brano memorabile.

Il resto dell'album, registrato dal vivo al "Big Top" di New Orleans, non è su questi livelli, ma non delude. In particolare "Crescent City Lullaby" delizia con la sua dolcezza, così come "And Now Miss Annie, the Black Queen" mette in luce la padronanza strumentale di McPhee e Zerang che qui soltanto si ricollegano alla tradizione moderna dei duetti sax-batteria, un po' sulla linea di Coltrane-Alì.
