Michel Godard: Cousins Germain

Scorrendo i nomi dei musicisti coinvolti in questo nuovo progetto del tubista transalpino, ci si immagina un lavoro che respiri l'atmosfere della free musik europea. Invece, già dal primo brano, “Visite”, un tema lento e dinoccolato, con il soprano a fare da mattatore, si capisce che Godard ha convocato i suoi “cugini” tedeschi pensando a ben altro.

Con questo suo nuovo gruppo senza strumenti armonici né basso, Godard riesce a tracciare un buon trait d'union complessivo tra il Gil Evans elettrico, spunti orchestrali vagamente à la Ellington e altri in qualche modo vicini all'estetica europea (in particolare il nodoso “Pastorale”). Senza dimenticare il recupero della tradizione popolare (“Alla ciaccona”). Le composizioni sono tutte strutturate sfruttando bene agli strumenti a disposizione, creando in alcuni casi piccoli insiemi che interagiscono nei temi e nelle improvvisazioni. Soprendente, a questo proposito, il duetto vibrafono-serpente di “Luna nera”.

In questa tavolozza a disposizione emergono bene il contralto acido di Pusching, la tromba pirotecnica di Joos, il vibrafono tagliente di Tortiller e, naturalmente, la tuba del leader, dal suono pieno e ricco di pathos. Una voce che ha ben pochi paragoni sulla scena attuale.
