Charlie Parker Festival 2018
ByAugust 24th opened with noted vocalist Brianna Thomas performing jazz standards with her talented swinging band. Charles Tolliver led a quintet of all stars to perform music from his groundbreaking 1968 album Paper Man. The quintet featured Gary Bartz, Jason Moran, Jack DeJohnette and Buster Williams.
August 25th opened with talented piano prodigy Matthew Whitaker leading his trio. He played both piano and B3 organ music heavily influenced by '70s r&b and gospel. Trumpeter Keyon Harrold presented the future of the music with his hip/hop influenced band. Catherine Russell sang music from the '20s-'40s got much of the crowd up to dance to her swinging sounds. Monty Alexander closed bringing the music of his native Jamaica, performing tunes by reggae greats Bob Marley and Burning Spear.
The festival was also presented in other locations throughout the city.
