Wadada Leo Smith, John Lindberg: Celestial Weather
La suite che apre il disco (e che si deve al trombettista, come del resto la successiva, laddove la terza e ultima è opera di Lindberg) decolla con una bella vivacità, pur nell'ovvia economia di mezzi (tromba e basso puri, dall'inizio alla fine), facendosi più meditativa nel secondo e ultimo movimento. Vi si avverte una notevole empatia, un'ammirevole pulizia, col clima che si fa nuovamente più scattante e nervoso sul finire (e Lindberg che predilige nel complesso l'archetto al pizzicato, e comunque in questa veste ci regala il suo profilo più alto).
La suite del titolo, pentapartita, è anche il cuore del disco, con Lindberg che alterna ancora pizzicato e archettato e Smith che non disdegna l'uso della sordina, su cui come ben sappiamo eccelle. Si fanno particolarmente apprezzare il vitale "Hurricane," "Typhoon" e il conclusivo "Tornado," ideale compendio, quintessenza, della suite, nel suo alternare segmenti più accesi con altri decisamente più quieti.
Chiude il dittico firmato dal bassista, concentrato e sospeso nel primo movimento, mosso e swingante nel secondo, a suggello di un album che rimarrà certamente nella discografia di entrambi i suoi artefici come una gemma forse isolata (in quanto duo, perché in incisioni a nome del trombettista le collaborazioni fra i due sono numerose) ma non per questo meno rilucente.
