Ran Blake - Sara Serpa: Camera Obscura

Negli ultimi anni la figura della cantante portoghese Sara Serpa ha iniziato a farsi apprezzare al di fuori della fervida (ma ancora poco nota) scena jazzistica di Lisbona. Il recente ingresso nel gruppo di Greg Osby (con cui ha inciso il recente 9 Levels) e la pubblicazione di quest'incontro con Ran Blake, inciso a Brooklyn nel dicembre 2009, incrementeranno di molto la sua notorietà.

Trent'anni, viso e timbro vocale di adolescente, Sara ha acquisito doti espressive sofisticate in un decennio almeno di esperienze sul campo e studi al Berklee College ed al New England Conservatory di Boston, dove ha conseguito nel 2008 il master in Jazz Performance.

E' stata allieva di Ran Blake che le ha proposto quest'incisione e la sostiene paternamente nel percorso musicale. I brani sono in gran parte ballads, disegnate coniugando atmosfere rarefatte e suggestioni d'impronta monkiana. La voce luminosa ed evanescente della Serpa ricorda sia Helen Merrill che Astrud Gilberto ma il suo modo d'affrontare i brani è significativamente personale. La cantante gioca abilmente con le sfumature e le dissonanze, entrando in sintonia con l'universo "noir" di Ran Blake e contribuendo ad infondere nei brani una luce sinistra, talvolta un po' spettrale, ma suggestiva.

Ran Blake gioca un ruolo volutamente di supporto ma è una guida attenta ed i suoi suggerimenti sono sempre efficaci.

Un disco di laconica bellezza, che svela il suo charme dopo alcuni ascolti.
