Massimo Barbiero Silence Quartet: Briseide

Torma il Silence Quartet di Massimo Barbiero, ma torna profondamente (e volutamente) rinnovato nei componenti e, di conseguenza, nei contenuti, visto che la cifra che il percussionista piemontese vuol dare alla formazione è quella dell’immediatezza e dell’improvvisazione non preparata.

I nuovi ingressi, che vanno ad affiancare la voce di Rossella Cangini e Barbiero stesso, sono il pianista Claudio Cojaniz e il contrabbassista Marc Abrams, due musicisti che già da tempo hanno sviluppato una forte sensibilità comune che portano all’interno del Silence Quartet, orientandone significativamente il lavoro in questa registrazione - si osservi, realizzata senza prove precedenti.

Il fatto poi che la quasi totalità dei brani presentati siano della penna del pianista - alcuni provengono dal recente piano solo Never Forever, ma sono significativamente modificati dagli interventi vocali - ancor più trascina le atmosfere orientate alla contemporanea del duo Berbiero-Cangini: si ascolti (e si guardi, visto che ve n’è una versione in video) “Narciso”, oppure “Prometeo”, nei quali i due operano senza accompagnamenti, per rendersene conto.

Il risultato è curioso e riuscito, perché il contrasto, per certi aspetti stridente, si fa alla fine virtuoso: la matericità messa in scena da Cojaniz e Abrams “scalda” le virtuosistiche improvvisazioni vocali della Cangini e le liberissime percussioni di Barbiero, venandole di blues e di tradizione afroamericana. Ed i sipari senza la voce (“Blue Question”, “Never Forever”), bellissimi, lungi dal separarsi dal lavoro corale, contribuiscono a ricordarne la radice e ad offrire all’ascoltatore un filo conduttore per l’ascolto globale.

Inutile sottolineare che il valore dei singoli - indispensabile elemento per la riuscita di un lavoro incentrato sull’interplay - è altissimo: tralasciando i ben noti Barbiero e Cojaniz, va detto che Rossella Cangini è un vulcano di effetti espressivi di limpidissima cifra, mentre Abrams eccelle particolarmente nei suoi interventi all’archetto.

Un lavoro, quindi, tanto particolare, quanto riuscito, che merita un ascolto attento e scevro da pregiudizi per poter essere apprezzato nella sua trasversale complessità.
