Prawit Siriwat: Blueberry
ByThe set launches with "Clank," where Siriwat's nimble picking and high-tech EFX hovers above a steadfast rhythm section, eventually morphing into abstract territories where structure meets exploration. The transitions from anchored grooves to untethered improvisations flow naturally, even when they venture into unexpected realms. This unpredictability is the album's distinctive characteristic, though some moments would benefit from a tighter focus.
On "Currents" Siriwat orchestrates an engaging balance between melodic theme-building, exploration, and calculated dissonance throughout its intricate development. WTFU emerges as a straightforward rock burner, where his stinging licks and fuzz-toned chord voicings demonstrate his command of rock idioms. The rhythm section maintains equilibrium with fluid movements and snappy pulses as Siriwat pushes his guitar to its limits before channeling Hendrix in a compelling mini-jam conclusion. "Lullaby" presents itself as a pleasant yet understated piece, displaying the reflective side of Siriwat's playing with measured restraint. "Interlude" begins with coarse and unwieldy lines plus speedy and silvery single-note riffs that challenge conventional tonality, amid spiky overtones before culminating in a raw, free-form heavy-metal explosion.
While Blueberry succeeds as a thoughtful fusion type of endeavor, especially for listeners who appreciate jazz-rock with experimental leanings, the album occasionally needs more structural cohesion. The improvisations sometimes drift rather than develop with a clear purpose. Nevertheless, Siriwat's technical mastery and artistic vision shine throughout, and his blend of groove and experimentation offers substantial rewards for adventurous listeners. The artist stands ready for continued growth as he refines his distinctive voice in this idiom.
