Blackout Conception è un CD di jazz moderno, realizzato dal trentaduenne pianista coreano (ma da quasi vent’anni residente negli USA) John Chin, qui all’esordio come leader. Il lavoro è condotto in parte in trio con il batterista Bill Campbell e (in alternativa) con i bassisti Alexis Cuadrado o Chris Higgins, in parte in quartetto, con l’aggiunta del tenorista Mark Turner.

L’album è pieno di swing, alterna situazioni diverse sia per genere (“Joanne Julia” ha influenze latin, “I Won’t Argue With You” è più intimista delle altre tracce), sia per origine (tre tracce originali, due omaggi a Kenny Barron, maestro di Chin, e due recuperi dalla grande tradizione) ed è certo ben suonato. Manca tuttavia di momenti veramente memorabili, nei quali la personalità degli interpreti si affermi all’ascolto.

Così, sebbene il disco si lasci ascoltare con piacere, colpiscono in particolare solo la qualità compositiva di Chin, espressa in “Won’t Argue With You” e l’estesa e intensa esecuzione in trio del classico di Billy Strayhorn, “Passion Flower”, che conclude il lavoro ed è anche la traccia nella quale il pianista mette meglio in risalto le sue capacità di strumentista.
