Aa.Vv.: Billy Strayhorn: Lush Life
Oggi, a quarant’anni dalla sua scomparsa, l’etichetta Blue Note pubblica questo CD, nel quale alcune delle sue più famose composizioni vengono interpretate da un nucleo di artisti davvero impressionante. Al di là del singolo brano, o della declinazione che ad esso viene attribuita dai singoli musicisti, quello che colpisce è la perfezione, la coerenza e l’attualità, diremmo quasi la contemporaneità della scrittura di Strayhorn.
Brani che sembrano scritti appena ieri. Delicatissime ballads, naturalmente, ma anche atmosfere più movimentate (“Johnny Come Lately”, o il delizioso duetto di “Tonk”, tra il pianoforte emergente di Bill Charlap e quello ormai storico di Hank Jones), che catturano l’attenzione e chiedono con forza un’interpretazione sincera, non stilizzante o stilizzata.
Ed ecco allora che la traccia più interessante (splendida!) è “My Flame Burns Blue (Blood Count)”, nella quale fa capolino la voce di Elvis Costello. Artista piuttosto distante dall’estetica jazz, e proprio per questo libero da timori reverenziali, da freni inibitori. La sua presenza, la sua consuetudine con la sperimentazione, il crocevia di generi, la ricerca “intelligente”, sono la gemma più preziosa di un album ricchissimo.
