BEATrio at the Perry Pavilion
ByAntonio Sanchez is a Grammy-winning Mexican drummer and composer celebrated for his dynamic artistry and genre-crossing creativity. Born in Mexico City in 1971, he began drumming at age five and later studied classical piano before earning jazz degrees from Berklee and the New England Conservatory. He rose to international prominence through his long-standing collaboration with guitarist Pat Methenyand gained widespread acclaim for his riveting solo drum score for the Oscar-winning film Birdman. With a career spanning jazz, film, and experimental music, Sánchez continues to push rhythmic boundaries and redefine what a drummer can be.
Edmar Castaneda is a Colombian-born harpist whose electrifying style has redefined the role of the harp in jazz and Latin music. Born in Bogotá in 1978, he began playing the traditional arpa llanera at 13 and later moved to New York City, where he fused his folkloric roots with jazz improvisation. Known for his dazzling technique and rhythmic complexity, Castañeda has performed with legends like Wynton Marsalis, Béla Fleck, and Hiromi. Whether leading his trio or collaborating across genres, he transforms the harp into a powerhouse of groove and expression.
Put them all together and you get the new super trio BEATrio. Banjo, harp, and drums might sound like an odd combo, but in their hands, it becomes an awe-producing blend of jazz, world music, and dramatic moments. Much of their music was co-written and was and brought to fruition during many live performances. The audience at the nearly sold out Perry Pavilion could not get enough of this dynamic group and yelled for more even as the trio left the stage.
