Will Sellenraad: Balance
Balance è l'album della piana maturità artistica, che consacra Sellenraaad quale chitarrista di punta della scena jazz statunitense. Sebbene allievo di John Abercrombrie e Jim Hall, egli sembra più vicino allo stile del miglior Kevin Eubanks, con cui condivide drive e approccio compositivo.

Nove le tracce illuminate dalle linee fluide e lineari del leader, ottimo solista ma anche dispensatore di sottili passaggi contrappuntastici nell'accompagnare gli interventi di Burton, de facto co-leader aggiunto dell'incisione.

Ma notevole è l'apporto anche compositivo degli altri due musicisti del quartetto, Lewis e Kitagawa, che firmano i brani più riusciti della scaletta. Un repertorio post bop efficacissimo, su cui piroettano sax e chitarra con un fraseggio disinibito, graffiante e ritmicamente sciolto.

Raffinata è la ricerca armonica nella sinuosa ballad "It's Been a Long Time," mentre un respiro più languido informa la deliziosa bossa "Nye". Due composizioni ed interpretazioni simbolo dell'ottima musica prodotta da questo eccellente quartetto, destinato a fare buone cose.
