Greg Ruggiero: Balance

L’inizio è deludente, perché “Answer“, il primo brano di Balance, è un concentrato di luoghi comuni del credo jazzistico. Se i nuovi talenti, come recita l’etichetta catalana, si limitano a replicare linguaggi, atmosfere, architetture, sonorità che hanno già vissuto il loro periodo d’oro, c’è poco da essere allegri sul futuro della musica improvvisata.

Poi, fortunatamente, qualcosa cambia. Le sonorità si fanno più decise, la chitarra morbida e noiosa dell’inizio lascia un po’ di spazio a qualche graffio, l’uso del fender rhodes vivacizza la tessitura armonica, e ritmicamente il pilota automatico viene sostituito da qualche buona intuizione.

Si rimane comunque saldamente ancorati ad un jazz accomodante, ben suonato - ormai farebbe scalpore il contrario - ma assolutamente prevedibile, con protagonisti ben preparati ma altrettanto ingessati nella produzione di idee musicali.

Greg Ruggiero, giovane chitarrista di Albuquerque, che vanta collaborazioni con musicisti illuminati come Greg Osby, Kurt Rosenwinkel e George Garzone, non è riuscito a trasferire nell’ album di debutto quegli elementi di originalità e di brillantezza che avrebbero potuto far uscire il disco da un decoroso anonimato.
