Un'eleganza persino un po' estenuata, benché squarciata da intermittenti bagliori, caratterizza questo che è l'album d'esordio del duo svizzero per l'etichetta di Manfred Eicher. Vi trovano posto composizioni per lo più a firma congiunta (ma "Ne Pidu Ja Do Lesa" è un tema tradizionale ucraino) con cui la coppia risponde a una commissione dell'Origen Cultural Festival (registrazioni del giugno 2013 presso l'Auditorium RTSI di Lugano, ingegnere del suono il nostro Stefano Amerio).

"La Babilonia del titolo—ci viene spiegato—è quella del Libro di Daniele, la fossa dei leoni, i giovani che cantano nella fornace ardente, un luogo di perdizione, un labirinto." Tutto ciò si manifesta in avvio mediante poche isolate note di pianoforte, cupe, gravi, molto alonate. L'elemento percussivo si affaccia poco oltre. Permane un'estrema concentrazione, una densità scura, a tratti quasi magmatica.

Una persino eccessiva asciuttezza, il fin troppo scarno, esangue, evolvere e lievitare dinamico (anche dove i contrasti esistono si tende sempre un po' troppo a stirare, a strascicare ogni cellula motivica ed espositiva), un procedere fra il liturgico e il sacrale che indulge non poco—forse fisiologicamente—a rimuginare parecchio su e intorno a se stesso, s'insinuano via via sempre più palpabili, trasmutando un album di indiscutibile fascino e originalità in un rito un po' rigido per quanto sempre ammaliante, suggestivo.

Tutto ciò non significa che il lavoro non trovi proprio in una spiccata identità la sua assoluta ragion d'essere e di farsi, anche, apprezzare.
