Gilad Atzmon: Artie Fishel and the Promised Band
“West Side Story” diviene così “West Bank Story”, “Bye Bye Blackbird” si muta in “Hoy Hoy Hoy Hoy Blackbird”, e così via, ma soprattutto le musiche originali vengono contaminate da riferimenti popolari - in genere ebraici, ma talvolta pop e blues - mentre i commenti, che narrano la paradossale storia di Artie Fishel (l’uomo che credeva che il jazz fosse nato nei ghetti ebraici della Polonia e dell’Ucraina…), fioriscono di festosi lazzi.
La musica, intesa nel suo valore più alto e serioso, forse ne soffre un po’ (ma ascoltate l’assolo di clarinetto di Fishel/Atzmon nel “Theme from Dvorak’s New World Symphony”!); non così il piacere dell’ascolto, che rimane intatto nella confusione di stili e atmosfere. Le quali, comunque, propongono gustose riletture, tra le quali spiccano “A Knight Into Nietzsche” (ovvero “A Night In Tunisia”…) - resa eterea nell’esposizione del tema da parte del sax contralto in secondo piano, drammatica dall’intensa batteria, inusuale dai cori fuori scena - e la spettacolosa “My Favourite Things” da festa popolare ebraica, cantata in coro con grandi assoli di clarinetto, che conclude la dissacrante orgia di musica.
Un disco ricco di genialità e gustoso, anche se il Gilad Atzmon di Exile resta - descrittivamente e qualitativamente - un’altra cosa.
