New albums from new 9Donkeys label

by Bob Osborne
On this show I am featuring three new albums from the new off shoot label of Screwgun Records called 9Donkeys. The music is from Tim Berne's Broken Shadows and Adobe Probe groups plus some duo work with Matt Mitchell. All three albums feature live recordings from the vaults. There are also examples of some of the excellent groundbreaking music coming out of the independently run Small Scale Music label, as well as exciting new releases from Bob Gluck, ...

Even by the customarily prolific standard he's set over the course of his career, 2020 is shaping up to be an especially accomplished year for saxophonist Tim Berne. His Fantastic Mrs. 10 (Intakt) offered another scintillating formulation of his well-established Snakeoil outfit, and his first solo album, Sacred Vowels (Screwgun), was also released. Sandwiched in between, but hopefully not overlooked for that reason, is The Coandă Effect, a live recording with drummer Nasheet Waits, which illuminates yet another facet of ...

Alto saxophonist Tim Berne has never met anything or anyone he doesn't instantly want to re-invent, invert, dismantle and polish into his own image. And no, it's not any kind of savior thing, messianic impulse or Dr. Stranglove fixation. He simply hears and sees things more offbeat, peculiar, and colorful, thank you very much. So too does any configuration of Snakeoil, Berne's wiry, spidery and like-minded core of engineers. As a league onto themselves, bass clarinetist Oscar Noriega, ...

Saxophonist Tim Berne figured out what he wanted to do early on, with albums like Ancestors (Soul Note, 1983), Nice Winter ( Winter & Winter, 1993), Science Friction (Screwgun, 2002) and Snake Oil (ECM Records, 2012)to pick one representative recording per decade from a jam-packed discography. I'm doing the same thing I've been doing from the start," he says. That thing is making madcap tapestries with various ensemble configurations, forming a collective voice full of piss and vinegar.

On this show, great new releases from cutting edge musicians. Tim Berne has released a new CD with his ensemble Snakeoil. After three albums on ECM it is the first Snakeoil record to be released on Intakt. On this album the quartet is joined by French guitarist Marc Ducret. The band balances the possibilities of composition, improvisation and the tonal possibilities of an electro-acoustic jazz band in a very original way. The debut album of the ...

by Giuseppe Segala
Trigonometria musicale? Triangolazioni sonore?
