Lars Danielsson, John Parricelli and Verneri Pohjola: Trio

Read "Trio" reviewed by Neil Duggan

Château Palmer is a wine estate in Margaux, in south-west France. Those that know about these things rate their wines as among the best anywhere in Bordeaux. If you are going to record a jazz album outside of the recording studio, then a light and airy wood-paneled salon at the château with French windows overlooking the serene estate seems to be an inspired choice. The recording came about as the second part of a project between the German label ACT ...

Alma Naidu: Alma

Read "Alma" reviewed by Phillip Woolever

Alma Naidu, a 26 year old songwriting vocalist based in Munich, has crafted a first rate debut showcasing an abundance of talent and a top-notch supporting team. German drummer Wolfgang Haffner produced this introductory gem and adds percussive precision in contributing a consistently subtle touch of the sticks. Well-aligned arrangements help keep the focus on Naidu, who shines throughout the record's 47:28 duration. The majority of pieces are backed by a core trio of Haffner, bassist Claus Fischer, ...

Jan Lundgren: Into the Night

Read "Into the Night" reviewed by Phillip Woolever

This excellent album is part of a series of modern jazz projects with a twist, featuring live recordings by many of the German label ACT's top artists, in unique, uncategorized, and often first time formations. The album comes from a 2020 set at the Ystad Festival in Sweden, which homegrown pianist Jan Lundgren founded and has directed since 2010. This trio actually arose out of necessity after a musician in Lundgren's originally scheduled group, which included Lars Danielsson, ...

Mette Juul: New York - Copenhagen

Read "New York - Copenhagen" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Larry Coryell & Philip Catherine: The Last Call

Read "The Last Call" reviewed by Phillip Woolever

ACT Music released this exceptional concert recording four years to the day after the February 19, 2017 death of 73-year old master guitarist Larry Coryell. The album documents a sensational set Coryell played with the equally skillful Belgian guitarist Philip Catherine at the Berlin Philharmonic. The event was an unplanned but fitting conclusion to their series of collaborations that began at the same location some forty-five years before. The sound dynamics and song selections create a vivid testimonial of musical ...

Lars Danielsson/Paolo Fresu: Summerwind

Read "Summerwind" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

ACT Music brings together a pair of virtuosos in Lars Danielsson and Paolo Fresu, for the duo outing Summerwind. Both are well-known for their melodic and expressive playing as well as an innate gift for spontaneity. Recorded in the Swedish seaport city of Gothenburg, in early 2018, the album incorporates elements of folk, classical and jazz music in a relaxed setting. Bassist and cellist Lars Danielsson has been a staple of the ACT label for more than ten ...
