Joe Lovano: On This Day... At The Vanguard

Read "On This Day... At The Vanguard" reviewed by Jim Santella

The nonet that Joe Lovano brought to New York’s Village Vanguard the last week of September 2002 returned to the good old days of jamming with well-known friends and improvising over established tunes. Like Supersax, the ensemble emphasizes a collective sound that features unison melodies that ring familiar and true to the veteran bebop fan. Everybody solos well, with the fresh kind of enthusiasm that only comes when you’re in the company of like-minded artists who respect and know each ...

Think Tank

It could be said that Pat Martino most fully represents the evolution of jazz guitar artistry from the 1960's to the present day. His playing displays a striking continuity over time, even though disrupted in mid-stream by his well-known bout with a brain aneurysm that led to nearly total amnesia, and from which he more than regained his full abilities and gifts by a heroic recovery process. Yet within that continuity are all the developments in “straight ahead" jazz from ...

Village Vanguard New York, NY September 25, 2003

Joe Lovano took the stage at the Village Vanguard on Thursday night and provided the packed house with an evening of inspired collaborative interplay that mirrored his career. He is a strong soloist, constantly searching for inspiration and finding it in both what he plays and the company he keeps. The words he spoke on stage Thursday evening reflected the notes he played. His new release is entitled ...

Joe Lovano: On This Day... At The Vanguard

Read "On This Day... At The Vanguard" reviewed by Joshua Weiner

"Ah, they don't make records like this anymore," you might find yourself sighing upon first hearing On This Day At The Vanguard. But look at the liner notes: the artist is Joe Lovano, and this fantastic album was recorded live at the Village Vanguard in September of 2002. This is the same nonet with which Lovano recorded the Grammy-winning 52nd Street Themes a few years back. While that record was a well-conceived and well-executed exploration of composer/arranger Tadd ...

Pat Martino: Think Tank

Read "Think Tank" reviewed by Clifford Allen

It is difficult to make mainstream jazz (hard bop, etc.) relevant in light of the subversion or destruction of its form that occurred over thirty years ago. But, as many improvisers proved, it was possible to make consistently engaging and advanced music in the hard bop idiom well after the innovations of Ornette and Cecil took hold, and though the case for it is a little tougher today, there are a number of musicians who have found something new to ...

Joe Lovano: On This Day... At the Vanguard

Read "On This Day... At the Vanguard" reviewed by Eddie Becton

From the very first bar, this disc swings. Saxophonist Joe Lovano brought everything but the proverbial kitchen sink to this live performance at the Village Vanguard. The horn-laden disc is resplendent with an energy level that must have left the band exhausted at the conclusion of the set. The breakneck speed of the opener, “At The Vanguard,” is reminiscent of a jam session of the utmost intensity. “Focus” has a relaxed pace, mellow and smooth, but still swings. Lovano stretches ...
