Jerry Garcia Band: Pure Jerry: Jerry Garcia Band - Bay Area 1978

Read "Pure Jerry: Jerry Garcia Band - Bay Area 1978" reviewed by Doug Collette

Bereft of extensive historical content (or tchotchkes such as the guitar picks that were included in previous Pure Jerry titles) this double-disc composite of four 1978 shows makes a statement solely through the music. Everyone involved in the Jerry Garcia Band lineup, including its prestigious leader, sounds deeply immersed in the group camaraderie which, in turn, enhances the live experience for the audience and the performer.

The opening “Mystery Train" is a great example of how deeply Garcia is enjoying ...

Jerry Garcia: Pure Jerry: Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium, 2/28/86

The Pure Jerry series of Jerry Garcia archive releases was on hiatus of sorts while The Grateful Dead's business agreement with the Rhino label was fully implemented. This single disc recording from February of 1986 reopens the archives and features the titular leader of the rock icons in top form as he partners with bassist John Kahn.

The guitarist/songwriter/singer developed one of his most stable and abiding musical relationships with Kahn over the years and they've been featured together in ...

Jerry Garcia: Renaissance Musician

Read "Jerry Garcia: Renaissance Musician" reviewed by Doug Collette

Two recently released albums reaffirm much about the solo career of the late, titular leader of the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia. The Very Best Of Jerry Garcia brings practically nothing new to the marketplace, unless you know very little about Garcia's activities outside the Dead itself. As an introduction to the varied and diverse projects the multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/singer engaged in, however, it succeeds admirably on its own terms. The Jerry Garcia Band's newest archive live set, Coliseum, Hampton, VA November 9 ...

Grateful Dead: Grateful Dead: Fillmore West 1969

Jerry Garcia Merriweather-Post Pavilion Live at Keystone Korner Pure Jerry 2004, 2005

Jerry Garcia may embody the essence of non-conformism, but he honored musical tradition like perhaps no other musicians of his generation. Flaunt it as he might've with the Grateful Dead, when he took respite from that band's improvisational gestalt, he could go in any number of directions. Two releases form the Pure Jerry series document opposite ends of ...

Beyond Description: Grateful Dead 1973-1989

Read "Beyond Description: Grateful Dead 1973-1989" reviewed by Doug Collette

Serendipity is dead... Grateful Dead that is. A successor to the similarly massive and comparably gorgeous box set The Golden Road (1965-1972) , Beyond Description (1973-1989) depicts the latter day Grateful Dead's utter and perhaps naïve willingness to surrender to their muse for inspiration, whether it be on the stage or in the studio. It becomes quite clear before you are even half-way through these dozen extended remastered CDs that, when this band was struck with inspiration, there ...
