The first CD, a four-part suite for quartet and the thirty-four-piece Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, is Shorter's first studio recording since Alegria (Verve, 2003), while the second and third discs capture the quartet live in London. The accompanying forty-eight page comic-book, co-written by Shorter and Monica Sly, with ...

Festival International de Jazz de Montréal Montréal, Canada July 3-4, 2017 July 3-4 | July 5-6 | July 7-8 It is a pleasure to be back in Montreal for what many have called the best jazz festival in the world" (saxophonist Joshua Redman said so last night on stage). One of the nicest things about hearing such a concentrated group of concerts is the possibility of the unexpected. Artists you know may ...

European Jazz Conference 2016 National Forum of Music Wroclaw, Poland September 22-25, 2016 We have two ears and only one mouth so perhaps we should listen more than we speak. This old maxim is often credited to Hellenistic philosopher Zeno of Citrium, though who's to say he didn't pinch it after being admonished by a fellow Stoic for not listening enough himself? We'll never know. What we do know, however, ...

by Doug Collette
It didn't take much thought to compose this list, perhaps because the inclusions run the gamut from finely-produced studio sessions to equally inspired live recordings (and much in between). And more so than in recent years, the playability of all these albums will surely equal their durability as time marches on, which is not necessarily a direct reflection of the intensity of hearing them (though they appear to be in descending order of same). by Libero Farnè
