Continue ReadingGiacomo Merega: Opus Dichotomous
by Mark Corroto
The title adopted by Giacomo Merega and Joe Morris' duo release Opus Dichotomous might be a false flag. This recording is anything but an exercise in contrasts. Merega's electric bass and Morris' guitar travel congruously throughout the nine tracks to deliver these improvised gems. Perhaps the dichotomy the title refers to is that of botany where a plant's dichotomous branching emanates from a common stem. Merega and Morris can be heard, along with drummer Jason Nazary, in the ...

by John Chacona
Alla Boara Trinity Cathedral Cleveland, OH December 6, 2024 Here in North America most of our Christmas traditions have origins in northern Europe. So the notion of an Italian Christmas might be hard to visualize. Santa filling stockings while eating biscotti and gulping down an espresso then merrily riding off on a Vespa? Well, why not? If the season is about keeping spirits bright, Alla Boara, brought the sun of the Mezzogiorno to the bleak ...
Continue ReadingAdam Berenson: What Is This Place?
by Dan McClenaghan
Pianist/keyboardist/composer Adam Berenson is fascinated with Eberhard Weber, the German jazz player probably better known for his worked with" listing than his own album releases. The influential bassist/composer has helped to shape and shade and color albums by, among others, saxophonist Jan Garbarek, Pat Metheny, guitarist Ralph Towner and vibraphonist Gary Burton. This is a minimal list" for someone who is often described as a minimalist artist. Let us say that Weber casts a spell and that Berenson ...

Al Jarreau gained nationwide recognition with the theme to the 1985 hit television show Moonlighting," which starred Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis. He also had a chart-topping single We're In This Love Together." Before he was a pop star, R&B singer, and a successful cross-over artist, Al Jarreau was the purest of jazz talents. He gained recognition with his breakthrough record Look To The Rainbow: Live In Europe (Warner Bros., 1977). Jarreau was part Jon Hendricks and part Sly Stone. ...

by Maurice Hogue
German pianist Joachim Kuhn headed for Paris in the midst of the late 60s-early 70s free frenzy in Europe, ultimately forming a very influential trio with bassist J.F. Jenny-Clark and drummer Daniel Humair. Kuhn considered that group the band of his life. He may have to make room for his new French Trio with bassist Thibault Cellier and drummer Sylvain Darrifourcq. Their debut recording, The Way, is a perfect vehicle for the 80 year-old Kuhn to be as free as ...
