Take Five with Guitarist Joey Stuckey

Read "Take Five with Guitarist Joey Stuckey" reviewed by AAJ Staff

by AAJ Staff

Editor's Note: Guitarist, producer, and educator Joey Stuckey completed this Take Five interview shortly before his passing in October 2026. We're grateful that he took the time to share his experiences, musical philosophy, and reflections with All About Jazz. We publish his answers in his own words, as he intended. An inspirational, award-winning artist, producer, and podcast host, Joey Stuckey blazed a trail for three decades before his untimely passing last month. Blind since age two, ...

Stephan Crump: Passerine

Read "Passerine" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

by Glenn Astarita

Bassist and composer Stephan Crump has rarely been interested in conventional jazz architecture. His ensembles emphasize interaction, with compositions that leave ample space for musicians to reshape the music as it unfolds. On Passerine, Crump leads a quartet featuring Kenny Warren on trumpet, David Leon on alto flute and saxophone and Ches Smith on percussion. Inspired by the ways birds construct nests, the seven compositions suggest structures assembled piece by piece, sometimes orderly, sometimes deliberately precarious, often through chamber-like passages.

Noel Langley: Syzygy

Read "Syzygy" reviewed by Neil Duggan

by Neil Duggan

There has been a 12-year gap since British trumpeter, composer and producer Noel Langley released his debut as a leader, Edentide (Suntara Records, 2014). He returns with Syzygy, an album that offers a partial account of what he has been doing in the intervening years. The core of the album was recorded during a session with pianist Alcyona Mick in 2000. Having also featured on Langley's debut, Mick shares an established musical rapport with him, allowing the duo to explore ...

Wolf—Future Perfect, 5. So What

Read "Wolf—Future Perfect, 5. So What" reviewed by Blue Note Portal

by Blue Note Portal

1970--New York The applause and laughter that followed Wolf's impossible five-four duet with Kyle took a long time to settle. Kyle was still sitting behind the drum kit with both sticks resting across his lap, grinning in a kind of exhausted disbelief. Zack leaned against his upright bass with his head tilted back and his eyes closed, as if recovering from a mild spiritual assault. Chloe had reclaimed her Telecaster but hadn't bothered to plug it back in. ...

Kris Davis Trio: Lost In Geneva

Read "Lost In Geneva" reviewed by John Sharpe

by John Sharpe

On Lost In Geneva, pianist Kris Davis extends the compositional and improvisational inquiry of Run The Gauntlet (Pyroclastic, 2024), deepening her interplay with bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Johnathan Blake. While the trio does not attempt to reinvent the format--bass and drums adroitly take care of business--it nonetheless subtly flexes the language. As well as tonal improvisations, the group also buys into Davis' singular writing, integrating nagging diversions and passages of minimalist patterning alongside the melodic invention and driving beat. ...

All About Jazz: Building the Future of Jazz, Together

Read "All About Jazz: Building the Future of Jazz, Together" reviewed by Michael Ricci

When I founded All About Jazz in 1995, I envisioned a place where people who loved jazz could share their knowledge, discover new music, and connect with others who shared their passion. Thirty-one years later, that vision has grown into an internationally respected institution serving musicians, writers, photographers, venues, record labels, presenters, educators, broadcasters, and listeners around the world.
