Andy Jaffe Nonet + 4: Arc

Gran bell'ensemble, quello messo assieme dal veterano Andy Jaffe per questo suo ambizioso progetto. Ne fanno parte nomi altisonanti, più un quartetto d'archi (di Taiwan) che si unisce qua e là (per esempio già nell'iniziale "Arc") al nonetto più squisitamente jazzistico.

Il materiale posto sul piatto è ottimamente oliato e confezionato, a trazione collettiva ma con ragguardevoli spunti dei solisti chiamati di volta in volta a dire la loro. Per tutta la prima parte del lavoro, tuttavia, non si oltrepassa un ambito post-bop pur di invidiabile fattura, con menzione particolare per l'ampio "Steve Biko."

Gradualmente, però, qualcosa inizia a cambiare già in "Fleurette chinoise," e più ancora nell'immediatamente successivo "Go Down Moses," notevole saxophone quartet, quindi in "Theme for the New Sixties," dove le trame compositive predisposte da Jaffe hanno modo di esprimersi in maniera quanto mai compiuta, e nel conclusivo "Now Then," più compassato, con la particolarità (non isolata, del resto) di porre sotto i riflettori due strumenti fortemente connotanti come il corno e il clarone.

Disco, quindi, che proprio nel suo lievitare qualitativamente -quando già si pensava di assistere sino alla fine a un prodotto di ottima fattura ma lievemente di maniera -ha il suo pregio più evidente.
