Bloodmist: arc

by Mark Corroto
May 21, 2022

arc, the fifth release by the trio Bloodmist , might be the 21st century's answer to Lou Reed's seminal work New York (Sire, 1989). Not that arc is a rock album, because it certainly is not. It has no lyrics, no references to dirty boulevards, dime store mysteries, or the demise of the American dream. It's ...

by John Eyles

Andy Jaffe Nonet + 4: Arc

by Alberto Bazzurro
July 5, 2016

Gran bell'ensemble, quello messo assieme dal veterano Andy Jaffe per questo suo ambizioso progetto. Il materiale posto sul piatto è ottimamente oliato e confezionato, a trazione ...

Andy Jaffe Nonet +4: Arc

by Mark Corroto
April 13, 2016

It is difficult to get past the opening, and title track, to Andy Jaffe's Nonet recording Arc. The reason being, it is a flawless piece of music as it is written, arranged and performed. There is just something about this little waltz that is cinematic, in both the sense that it feels like the soundtrack to ...

Contrasting Faces of Spontaneous Music Ensemble

by John Eyles
July 26, 2013

For years, the Emanem label has had so many releases by Spontaneous Music Ensemble in its catalogue that it has become the de facto guardian of the SME legacy, the keeper of the flame. Although there have been excellent SME recordings on other labels--Karyobin (Island, 1968; Chronoscope, 1993) and Spontaneous Music Ensemble (Marmalade, 1969; Polydor, 1972) ...
