Bossa Nova and the compositions of Antonio Carlos Jobim have continued to inspire musicians across the globe, including many jazz musicians in the US from the 1960s to the present day.Jazz in the 1960s saw the emergence of the jazz avant-garde, and many musicians found their audience slipping away to rock and the English invasion. Bossa Nova's popularity gave them a chance to recapture some of their audience. Stan Kenton, Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Zoot Sims, Quincy Jones, Herbie Mann, Cannonball Adderley, Dave Brubeck, Gerry Mulligan, Wes Montgomery, George Shearing, and Oscar Petersonall made bossa nova albums.
In this hour, we'll hear some instrumental interpretations of classic bossa nova tunes from US-based jazz artists. You'll hear Miles, Gerry Mulligan, Paul Desmond, Joe Henderson, Anat Cohen, the Rosenberg Trio and Samara Joy.
