Album Description
Traces is the debut album from Montreal-based Canadian drummer, composer, and record producer Will Régnier. The genre-defying instrumental music on Traces seamlessly blends various styles to create a truly unique and engaging musical universe. Drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of jazz, folk, and progressive rock, the nine pieces within the record embody artistic exploration. The improvisation, spontaneity, and interactive spirit reminiscent of jazz serve as the album’s foundation. This infusion of creativity and unpredictability not only imparts a dynamic and vibrant essence to the album, but also contributes a compelling sense of vulnerability and novelty. At its core, Traces warmly embraces the lyrical sensibility and storytelling inherent in folk music. The emphasis on melody acts as a poignant anchor; each phrase, instead of merely serving as a melodic element, transforms into a narrative vehicle, skillfully unfolding the album’s story like chapters in a novel. This album also explores the eclecticism and virtuosity drawn from the realm of progressive rock. Bold and experimental, Traces melds intricate time signatures with innovative arrangements that defy conventional expectations. From serene textures to virtuoso passages, it crafts an artfully designed musical arc. Will has surrounded himself with extraordinary musicians: Yannick Anctil on piano, Marcus Lowry on electric guitar, and Alex Le Blanc on double bass. Each musician infuses every note with profound meaning and brings his unique personality to the music. The quartet seeks a delicate equilibrium between the musicians’ virtuosity and a selfless approach, prioritizing the music to avoid any overshadowing by individual egos. Traces will be released worldwide on February 16, 2024. The release will be celebrated at La Sala Rossa in Montreal on March 23rd.
