Album Description
Chabad Al Hazman (literally “Chabad on the time”) was Yosef Gutman Levitt’s first album: Chabad nigunim, the wordless Hasidic melodies, played on his five-string acoustic bass guitar with an ensemble of clarinet and flute, piano and Rhodes, oud, kamancheh, ney, accordion, guitars and percussion.
Gilad Ronen, Levitt’s roommate at Berklee some twenty-five years earlier, arranged and produced the album, and the two chose the nigunim together. It was recorded live over three days at Pluto Studios in Tel Aviv.
“When playing Hasidic nigunim,” Levitt says, “God is above the music, and the music is there in order to make a space through which people connect.”
