Dhafer Youssef: Abu Nawas Rhapsody

Di Dhafer Youssef, quarantatre anni, nativo di Teboulba, Tunisia, questo è il quinto album; e diciamo subito che, rispetto a quanto conosciamo di lui, non riserva sorprese di sorta, confermando pregi e difetti di una musica senz'altro suggestiva, con un suo pathos, ma non di rado un po' sopra le righe, un po' sguaiata, troppo attenta all'effetto a discapito di rigore e buongusto (in ciò differenziandosi, per esempio, da quella del conterraneo e collega di strumento Anouar Brahem).

Questo Abu Nawas Rhapsody non fa eccezione alla regola. Urtano sempre un po' quella vocalità estenuata, talora lagnosa, fra il ritualistico e l'apocalittico (prevalente), spesso in un improbabile falsetto fin troppo sfoggiato e artificioso, quell'indugiare in atmosfere stereotipate, a loro volta effettistiche (perché di grana piuttosto grossa), quei cromatismi non di rado enfatici e tutto sommato scontati (stante il contesto), certe ridondanze e certe reiterazioni.

Le cose migliori, anche qui, ci giungono così dal particolare: qualche passaggio, qualche brano più sorvegliato, garbato, lo scoccare di una qualche scintilla, anche momentanea. E' quanto accade in due episodi, quasi aforistici (quanto preziosi), per ud solo, "Interl'oud" e "Shaouk," o nel più ampio "Shatha," di una vitalità per una volta senza svenevolezze e sovrabbondanze di sorta. In tutto dieci minuti scarsi: per un disco che oltrepassa l'ora, onestamente un po' poco.
