The Royal Dan: A Tribute
Poveri Steely Dan, maltrattati e tirati per la giacca. Traditi nello spirito, verrebbe da dire. Perché il gruppo più elegante e sofisticato degli anni ’70 - “coloro che hanno elevato a forma d’arte l’easy listening” ha scritto qualcuno - tutt’altro è stato che non un gruppo rock fracassone e adrenalico come questo disco fa credere.

La premiata ditta Becker & Fagen si è abbeverata alla fonte dei tanti generi che sono affluiti nel mare magnum della musica popolare americana dal dopoguerra ad oggi (rock ovviamente, ma anche blues, jazz, folk, reggae, disco music), abbozzando, album dopo album, un vero e proprio “manuale della canzone transtilistica”. Piccoli gioielli lavorati con cura artigianale. Qualcuno riuscito meglio, qualcuno peggio, ma sempre gioielli. Nessun altro gruppo è riuscito ad avvicinarsi alle loro arte (forse solo i China Crisis negli anni ‘80, sui quali - manco a dirlo - vigilava l’ombra lunga di Walter Becker).

Di tutto questo qui non c’è traccia. La band messa su da Jeff Richman e soci, che chiama a raccolta nove chitarristi dell’area pop-fusion, si avvicina al mondo degli Steely Dan con l’eleganza di un’elefante. Prende le loro canzoni e le svuota di contenuto. Le priva di senso. La quadratura degli arrangiamenti asfittica (ma dov’è il pastorale lirismo di brani come “Dirty Works” o “Midnite Cruiser”?), la chitarra spesso irritante (che ne è del morbido timbro bluesy di Walter Becker o Danny Dias?) e la batteria a macinare un martellante ritmo rock (dov’è finito il funky sinuoso di Bernard Purdie?) gridano vendetta come si suol dire. Né si intravede un briciolo di ricerca sulla melodia, sull’armonia, sul ritmo. Se proprio dobbiamo salvare qualcosa, questa è “Aja”, rei-interpretata con un inaspettato tocco di Leggerezza e sensibilità (sarà perchè alla chitarra c’è Al Di Meola?). Ma alla fine, tutto risulta esageratamente sopra le righe.

Un disco davvero brutto. O un’operazione riuscita male, fate voi.
