Roberto Mattei 8tet: A Time Remembered

Nel rendere omaggio al pianista Bill Evans il contrabbassista Roberto Mattei ha un occhio di riguardo nei confronti delle proprie esperienze classiche. Grazie ad ottimi arrangiamenti, e a questa vena "classica," Mattei riesce ad evitare i noti modelli che ascoltiamo su e giù per la Penisola, ma realizza un valido progetto di crossover.

Al quartetto di ritmica con chitarra si aggiunge un quartetto d'archi. Le melodie di Evans sono reinterpretate in maniera gradevole. Lo si può definire come si vuole, magari jazz da camera (pur i confronti con un Modern Jazz Quartet sarebbero fuori luogo) o semplicemte jazz italiano. Tra i punti di forza gli assoli del chitarrista Fabrizio Spadea, che immettono vitalità nelle esecuzioni, e gli arrangiamenti del leader, che ben fondono le parti scritte affidate agli archi con le parti dei solisti jazz.

Chissà se questo A Time Remembered sarebbe piacuto a Bill Evans. Forse sì, forse no. Fatto sta che mette in luce il suo lato più "europeo," a contatto con il mondo della classica.
