AA.VV.: 55 Years of Jazz (CD+DVD)
Dei 13 brani proposti, solo cinque sono anteriori alla decade degli anni '90, che invece imperversa a tutto tondo. E non bastano Coleman Hawkins, Sun Ra e Art Hodes a risollevare una sostanziale aurea mediocritas generale, che porta all'esclusione di Braxton e dei chicagoani, a vantaggio di Eric Alexander, Deep Blue Organ Trio e Francine Griffin.
Brani e nomi di tutto rispetto, ma pur sempre personaggi minori rispetto alle icone (Willie the Lion Smith, George Lewis, Bud Powell, e Joseph Jarman, Roscoe Mitchell solo per citarne alcuni) del catalogo Delmark. Di ben altro livello il DVD, più in linea con le scelte editoriali di questa gloriosa label, per via di proposte inconsuete e sferzanti sul piano dell'espressività.
È il caso del Chicago Underground Trio e Fred Anderson, con le loro entusiasmanti performance, per dar luogo a due lunghe grandiose improvvisazioni collettive esaltate dalla dimensione "live". Eccellente pure il Ritual Trio, che ben si completa con il jazz tradizionale dei "Jazz O Maniacs" ed il mainstream della flautista Nicole Mitchell.
