Di Ned Rothenberg sappiamo - o almeno dovremmo sapere - molto: che da una trentina d'anni (e da venti sotto gli occhi di tutti) è uno dei più avidi e intelligenti sperimentatori di area jazzistica (pur in senso lato), che è strumentista sopraffino, in possesso di una marcata identità, che alla pratica del solo si dedica con regolarità e rigore ferreo.

Tutto ciò, se ce ne fosse bisogno, ci è rammentato a chiare lettere da questo notevole album, in cui il cinquantaseienne polistrumentista bostoniano si concentra unicamente sui clarinetti, che maneggia con maestria assoluta, dimostrando quanto il suo orecchio sia andato sì ai grandi sperimentatori del ceppo afroamericano, ma anche alla contemporaneità in senso lato: a certa musica etnica in cui il clarinetto occupa un posto centrale, all'avanguardia colta (lo Stockhausen dell'Harlekin, per esempio), alla scena europea tout court.

Come recita il titolo, oltre che sul clarinetto Rothenberg ha deciso in questo lavoro di polarizzare le proprie attenzioni attorno agli armonici, suoni parassiti et similia, che snocciola con grande padronanza, senza peraltro scadere mai nel mero esercizio di stile: c'è sempre una palpabile linea poetica, nel suo precedere, foraggiata anzitutto da una purezza timbrica pressoché assoluta, pur in una materia, si converrà, che proprio nell'impurità ama invischiarsi non poco. Sono le nervature intestine dei suoni (e non) emessi dal Nostro ad ascendere sempre a quella purezza, un po' secondo la vecchia regola in base alla quale l'avanguardia più pura, assoluta, nasce dal sapere tutto (molto, diciamo) per poi dimenticarlo.

Entrare nei meandri dei singoli brani, dopo quanto detto, ci apparirebbe francamente pleonastico, un po' fumoso: invece che elencare gli episodi migliori, diciamo quindi che la perfezione è rasentata ovunque, tranne un paio di momenti - "Odd Not Odd" e "Line Drawling" - in cui la pratica "parassitaria" raggiunge forse acmi lievemente aridi, rigidi, esacerbati. Per il resto ci si muove lungo direttrici - geometrie e dinamiche - sempre impeccabili, con un incedere qua e là persino maestoso, e una ricerca del dettaglio (in particolare nel rapporto fra emissione e diteggiatura) assolutamente esemplare.

Un disco, come si sarà capito, certamente da non perdere.
