Endangered Blood: Work Your Magic

Nato come gruppo per sostenere le spese mediche del collega Andrew D'Angelo, il quartetto Endangered Blood si è poi rivelato uno dei progetti più convincenti della premiata ditta Chris Speed & Jim Black, qui affiancati dal basso di Trevor Dunn e dal sax contralto e clarinetto basso di Oscar Noriega, musicista che si sta conquistando di anno in anno una meritatissima reputazione come stimolante controparte di front lines sassofonistiche [vedi oltre a questa, la collaborazione con gli Snakeoil di Tim Berne].

La ricetta è quella già apprezzata nell'omonimo disco d'esordio di un paio di anni fa: con musicisti che naturalmente si muovono tra avantjazz, rock e sperimentazione, è facile che gli esiti siano fantasiosi e coinvolgenti e questo nuovo lavoro lo conferma in pieno.
La sintonia tra Speed e Noriega è sempre più raffinata e la combinazione dei quattro strumenti rende particolarmente variegate le possibilità timbriche di temi zigzaganti e contagiosi, cuciti da acuminati contrappunti e fatti muovere in continuazione dalle invenzioni ritmiche di basso e batteria.

Ma è la facilità con cui i temi generano i momenti di improvvisazione e viceversa quella che colpisce, come nelle splendide "Ah-Le-Pa" e "Argento," nonché in momenti di danza sghemba come "Manzanita" o nella notturna "LA#5" che chiude il disco.
Seconda prova che rifinisce qualcosa di già eccellente.
