Steve Kuhn Trio: Wisteria
La sua partnership con Joey Baron va avanti da due decenni, quella con Swallow risale alla metà degli anni sessanta ma i tre musicisti incidono assieme ora per la prima volta. Nessun protagonismo, nessuna volontà di presentarsi come un supertrio anche se ne avrebbero tutte le carte; la relazione è quanto mai empatica e si snoda all'insegna di un jazz oltre il tempo e le mode, dove il lirismo è palpabile e lo swing contagioso.
Il repertorio consiste principalmente di brani del leader, alcuni dei quali rivisitati da passati dischi ECM, come "Pastorale" e "Romance". Swallow contribuisce con il danzante "Dark Glasses" e il serrato "Good Lookin' Rookie" mentre altri brani vengono dal repertorio di Carla Bley, Dorival Caymmi e Art Farmer. La splendida ballad di quest'ultimo, "Wisteria" è uno degli episodi più intensi del disco.
La presenza di Swallow al posto di David Fink, abituale bassista di Kuhn, contribuisce alla freschezza di questo lavoro: il suo pastoso sostegno e i vari interventi "chitarristici" aggiungono nuove dinamiche e nuovi colori, in un continuo dialogo tra lui, il leader e il propulsivo drumming di Baron.
Non c'è altro da aggiungere: tutto si snoda in forma splendidamente "naturale" e l'adesione ai valori classici è esaltata dall'intenso e creativo apporto individuale e collettivo.
Un disco magnifico, altamente raccomandabile.
