Mike DiRubbo: Way Out Northwest

Some recordings try to overwhelm the listener with grand statements. With Way Out Northwest, alto saxophonist Mike DiRubbo is not trying to reinvent modern jazz but to remind us how rewarding it can be when four musicians know one another, allowing the music to develop through relationships built over time. Pianist Tilden Webb, bassist Jodi Proznick and drummer Jesse Cahill have shared enough club dates with DiRubbo to know each other's preferences. The track list of six original compositions, alongside pieces by pianist Hotep Idris Galeta and trombonist Steve Davis, becomes a reflection on friendship, mentorship and gratitude rather than a simple vehicle for improvisation.

On the title track, "Way Out Northwest," the melody gives DiRubbo room to stretch without losing the tune's identity. Webb's playing is rich in harmonic colour, while Proznick and Cahill create a comfortable swing. "Striking Distance" adds another layer of energy, with DiRubbo delivering its angular melody and rhythmic accents that keep everyone alert. Webb's offering is rewarding, fuelled by modern harmonic ideas. Cahill's drum kit gets a workout, with Proznick keeping everything firmly grounded.

Pianist Hotep Idris Galeta's composition "Song For My Queen" shifts the atmosphere with a jaunty, Latin-flavoured vibe. DiRubbo stays in his lane with his warm, centred alto sound. Webb, Proznick and Cahill follow his lead, showing they are a smart, robust rhythm team. The late trumpeter Jim Rotondi was both a mentor and a close musical companion to DiRubbo. His composition "Jimbo" serves as both a tribute and an expression of gratitude to him. DiRubbo's line is built on a sturdy foundation as he moves deftly through the changes like a conversation with an old friend. Webb's supporting pianism is both assertive and soulful.

By this point, it has become clear that DiRubbo may acknowledge the influence of John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson and Duke Ellington, and share musical DNA with the likes of Steve Davis and Kurt Rosenwinkel, this recording never sounds like it is based on a collection of borrowed ideas. The players all contribute to the story and are adept at sharing musical concepts.

"Timing Is Everything" is a number in which Cahill's drumming is particularly impressive. Whether DiRubbo or Webb takes the lead, he colours every phrase with rhythmic give-and-take that constantly plays with expectation. The closing "One For Mabes" is dedicated to pianist Harold Mabern, another important figure in DiRubbo's musical life. The number sprints along, propelled by Cahill's steamroller drumming, with DiRubbo's performance offering clarity of attack and fluent intensity, and Webb confirming that he is a fleet-fingered marvel.
