Padronanza assoluta dello strumento e capacità illimitata di variare tipologia e modalità nel processo compositivo. Sono le caratteristiche principali della cifra artistica del pianista venezuelano Edward Simon, qui al suo primo disco per la Cam Jazz.

Rispetto alle sue precedenti incisioni da leader, egli si dimostra artista ancora più completo e maturo sul piano dell’organizzazione musicale. In Unicity, due sono le sostanziali novità a marcarne la distanza rispetto ai dischi degli anni ’90: una maggiore aderenza alla sfera armonica jazzistica, che risulta prevalente rispetto all’amato mondo latinoamericano.

La cantabilità e la linearità della sua scrittura abbandonano poi le forme più estese ed articolate, per concentrarsi su pochi granelli aforistici di note: deliziosi bozzetti attorno ai quali procede la stratificazione ritmico metrico di questo magnifico trio, che nella pratica esecutiva rimanda allo Shorter di oggi in quanto a strategie e direzione musicale.

Tensione e distensione; pieni e silenzi; continua oscillazione del metro verso territori più liberi. Sono i tratti più percepibili di questo affascinante flusso sonoro, condotto senza forzatura dall’alto di una mirabile sapienza armonica, con ampi margini di spazio anche per le melodie raffinate di Prelude N. 9.

Potrebbe essere questo CD a segnare sul piano discografico la consacrazione definitiva di Simon, che peraltro ha qui la fortuna di avere due notevoli compagni di viaggio quali il contrabbassista John Patitucci ed il batterista Brian Blade.
